Memory Supplements: Phosphatidylserine

  4. Memory Supplements: Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine is a supplement that was initially taken from the brain cells of cows and was considered a possible treatment option for memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, and other cognitive behaviors.

Because of the increasing concern regarding mad cow disease, companies have used soy- and cabbage-derived phosphatidylserine instead. The initial studies done on the cow-derived supplements were promising, but it is unknown if the plant-derived phosphatidylserine supplements are as powerful or beneficial as the original derivatives.

Past clinical trials have shown that there was in fact a benefit from taking phosphatidylserine. Specifically, that there was an increase and improvement of the cognitive abilities of Alzheimer’s disease patients as well as individuals who suffered from mild memory loss. Unfortunately, the improvements seen were short-term and were only visible in patients with less severe, debilitating symptoms.

Not only has phosphatidylserine been tested as a powerful brain-booster, but it has been shown to possibly boost concentration, mood, and coordination. This supplement has also been shown to benefit both the young and the old, and can help lower your risks of dementia and cognitive dysfunction to those later in their life.

Though more research is being done on the benefits of phosphatidylserine, it is believed to hold a positive link between memory loss and the improvement of cognitive functions, and may very well be a wonderful supplement for you.

If you are considering a memory supplement for yourself, it’s important to remember that not all supplements are regulated by the FDA, and that the claims are not backed by any organization or foundation. Therefore, you may want to discuss any supplements you plan on taking with your doctor to ensure that they will work for you and will not interact with any other medications you are taking.
