Memories Related to Your Hearing

Home > Blog Posts > How to Improve Memory > Long-Term Memory > Memories Related to Your Hearing

Certain moments will stay in your memory, no matter how big or how small they are. But sometimes, it’s the WAY we remember things that helps us recall them. Sometimes memories are stored by certain senses—by the way we see them, by the feelings we remember during them, or by the tastes we experienced at the time (say, to recall a wonderful dinner out at a fancy restaurant).

For instance, when it comes to memory, sometimes we remember things through things we physically hear—for example, if you hear the sound of a firecracker, you may associate it immediately with the Fourth of July. Or if you hear a certain song, it may make you think of an old flame from high school because it was a popular song while you were dating. Certain sounds can bring about certain memories in your life and can be associated with people, places, or feelings.

The memories that are stored in relation to your hearing can be found primarily in your temporal lobes. These particular memories can be hard to think of and bring to the forefront of your mind on your own, but by hearing a certain sound, it can bring these memories about. You may have totally forgotten about your cousin’s wedding, but the minute you hear the bride and groom’s first dance song on the radio, it instantly brings the memory to mind.

Never underestimate the power of your mind and its ability to store and recall memories from throughout your lifetime. You would be amazed at how much you can recall through your five senses!
