Scientists have discovered that the brain is more similar to a muscle than we previously thought. Like a muscle, our brains also need exercise to become more efficient and more capable of performing its tasks.
In children, proper exercise helps them to develop strong muscles and bones. But we are learning that the games they play and activities they perform also tremendously affect the development of their brains. Children’s minds are often referred to as sponges. A better term might be weeds. When given the proper stimulus, kids’ brains are capable of developing at an amazing rate. This ability to quickly learn new things and form permanent memories makes childhood the most important time in one’s life in terms of brain development.
Children should be challenged with as wide a variety of activities and games as possible. Games that challenge a child’s memory are especially important and can improve a person’s ability to learn throughout life.
Many people remember the old card game of matching like cards. This is still an excellent memory game for younger kids. The electronic game called Simon Says came later and challenged kids to remember an increasingly long string of blinking colors. This frustrating game kept kids and adults alike entertained for hours while developing mental skills.
These days, the classic games can all be found online for free along with hundreds of other memory enhancing games. It’s not important that your child knows the game is helping them learn. In fact, the best games are those that don’t resemble learning at all. These are the ones that will quietly develop your kid’s mental functions while they play away.
